Cafe “URBAN SUN”
The layout of this canal-type building is an interesting challenge for functional cafe planning. The rooms on the first floor, except for the hallway in the back to get to the second floor, are used to create the “Urban Sun”.
Ground floor situation before starting the project:
South-west windows;
Entrance from the street side;
Narrow and elongated space;
In the middle of the longest wall is a staircase to the second floor;
There is a narrow room next to the stairs;
Additional entrance from the backyard;
Column in the middle of the room.
The main priorities of the project are to create a long-lasting interior, a strong design concept and functional movement areas for both visitors and the staff.
The design concept is based on the sun. The windows on the south-west side provides sunlight almost all day long. The “Urban Sun” is a place where solar light and its warmth can stay in this urban environment. A place where people are warmed up. There are office buildings near the cafe. It is a great opportunity to provide a lunch break for people who spend their working days in a cold office space.
The accent tone of the color palette Pantone Amber is mainly used in the design of chairs. As illustrators of the sun, they create a pleasantly gentle contrast with the shades of the light gray concrete. The glass used in the tables create a feeling of airiness in the café. It also creates playful reflections of the light.
The café will also excite lovers of minimalism. The hustle and bustle of many metal parts is balanced with calm concrete . The menu offer is not overloaded. Both sandwiches and pastries have interesting vegan offerings that don't require multiple options. The drinks are grouped simply. The cocktail concepts justify that there are only two options, as they are quite enough to cheer up the cafe guests. As well as theme of the interior about the solar light is clear, simple, and "pure". Nothing too much.
Those who want to enjoy the sun more choose the high bar-type counter by the large windows. Visitors who want to feel only the pleasant warmth will go further into the room, where there are three types of seating areas. A large group or a couple or alone, each will find their own comfortable place to sit and enjoy the delicacies and interior of the “Urban Sun”. The number of seats in the cafe for visitors is 37. In the busiest season, for example, in the summer, there will be tables outside in front of the cafe.
The large round conference table at the back of the room illustrates the Sun as a planet that brings people together and creates a comfortable environment. The stylish circular lamp above the table will help visitors to have fun, whether the board games are played or students complete group projects. Everyone is invited with their ideas.
The cafeteria counter is located closer to the beginning of the room, but not at the very entrance. Thus, allowing visitors to enter the room, and evaluate its interior and layout. To figure out in which direction to go without rushing. There is an ordering area in the nearest corner of the counter from the entrance. Drink / dessert menu, cash register and sunny staff ready to take your order.
The cafe has two employees who serve customers behind the counter. One serves as a bartender and serves desserts and other snacks. The snack display is within easy reach of the bartender. On the other hand, if another employee, whose main tasks are cash register and preparation of hot drinks, needs access to a snack display, it is also easy to do. Colleagues do not interfere with each other when exchanging work responsibilities, if it is agreed that only one of the employees is responsible for the cash register. The sink is equally convenient and can be easily accessed from the coffee machine area, the display area, and the bar service area.
The drinks and glasses on the wall display are functionally used, complementing the interior with the basic value of minimalism, such as: design must have a meaning.
Staff rooms, such as the toilet and lounge area, are located on the second floor. Employees can easily access it as the exit from the service area is near the stairs to the second floor. For visitors, the toilet is in the room by the stairs.
The interior has lines: straight and concave. Symbolizing both the sharp rays of the sun and the shadows that falls over objects. The interior design of the café creates an urban environment that is warmed by the sun. Urban Sun's design reflects the values of urban, industrial and minimalism. Together creating a mixture of flowing styles.
When you go to "Urban Sun", have a delicious coffee, and let the sun warm your cheeks!
